bear defeat
Bruno (aka JJ1) was too much for Germans. He killed and ate barnyard animals. He eluded Finnish hunting dogs. He attracted tourist attention. But it was only a matter of time before the heavy hand of German law and order caught up with the brown bear. He was killed yesterday, the first brown bear killed within Germany’s borders since the 1830s. You can read an article in Deutsche Welle by clicking here. I recently saw Werner Herzog’s excellent documentary Grizzly Man. People seem unable to leave bears well enough alone. This is something I don’t understand as I spent my entire time backpacking through the northwestern U.S. avoiding close enounters with bears. Of course, in Europe it’s not easy for everyone to keep there distance. In Germany there are a lot of people and very little habitat.
