sensory overload

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

The past week+ on New Zealand’s South Island has been a string of stunning alpine scenery and pristine beaches. I am feeling overwhelmed. Maybe I’ll spend tomorrow at the Burger King next to our motel, just to put a stop to all the prettiness.

We spent the past four days “tramping” near Christchurch. It was as good as hiking can get. Great scenery, entertaining hiking companions, cozy hobbitesque cottages to sleep in. This country kind of freaks me out. It’s almost too nice. Where’s the edge?

just hanging

Haven’t even made it out of Auckland yet, but am already impressed with New Zealand. We were staying in this posh B&B in the middle of the “bush” with views of the ocean. The house was pretty much all windows, so it was like we were living in the middle of the forest. I haven’t heard that many cicadas since summer in southern Indiana.

We have spent most of our first days here hanging out with D. & M. and planning the rest of our trip to the south island. But we also managed to sneak in trips to surfing beaches, costal hikes and delicious fish and chips. Tomorrow we fly to the south island to see if New Zealand’s mountains live up to expectations.

breeding curiosity

How does a The Breeders’ tune end up becoming a theme song on NPR? I hear it at least once a week on Morning Edition. Yes, I can listen to NPR even here in ja-ja land. It’s all thanks to an ingenious device called Noxon, which allows me to listen to internet radio and my digital music over the stereo. I love staying up-to-date on the Seattle music scene thanks to KEXP and to hear all my classic rock favorites on Radio Haruaki. Who thought that someday New Zealand radio waves would be rocking my world?
